The county town and the villages that ring it. Four places have pages of their own; everything else is covered from the same yard, and where a town belongs to a sibling site we will say so.

The Georgian and Victorian centre with its conservation area, the Victorian streets running out towards Weymouth Avenue, the post-war and modern estates on the edges, and Poundbury's classical terraces, courtyards and apartments on the western side. The widest range of front doors in the patch, inside about ten minutes.

Charminster at the bottom, Charlton Down's former hospital conversions above it, and the lanes climbing through Godmanstone and Nether Cerne towards Cerne Abbas. High banks, narrow carriageways, few passing places, and valley roads that flood on a fairly predictable schedule.

Puddletown, split between a tight old core around the square and easy modern housing behind it, then up the valley through Piddlehinton, Piddletrenthide, Tolpuddle and Affpuddle. South of the road the heathland scatters properties down long unmade tracks.

Broadmayne, West Knighton, Osmington, Bincombe and Owermoigne along the ridge towards the coast, and Martinstown, Winterborne Monkton, Frampton and Maiden Newton to the west. Exposed roads where wind matters more than most people expect, and a high share of downsizer moves.

Weymouth and Portland proper, Bridport, Sherborne, Blandford, Wareham and the BCP conurbation are county-wide work rather than ours. Our Dorset-wide sister site covers the whole county and knows those towns better than a Dorchester crew would, so we point people there rather than covering a town in passing. Beyond Dorset we move people out of the area constantly — east to Hampshire and London, north to Bristol and the Midlands, west into Devon and Cornwall, and abroad.
