Removals in Charminster & Charlton Down
North of the town along the Cerne valley — an old village that grew, the converted hospital estate at Charlton Down, and the chalk-downs lanes running up towards Cerne Abbas.
North of Dorchester the land rises into the chalk downs and the Cerne valley runs up through it. Charminster sits at the bottom of that, Charlton Down above it, and the lanes carry on towards Cerne Abbas and the villages beyond.
Charminster
An old village that grew rather than a new estate with a church in it. The core is stone cottages and older property on tight lanes with limited standing; everything built since is post-war and modern housing with driveways and turning space. Two quite different kinds of day within a few hundred metres of each other.
Charlton Down
Worth its own paragraph because it is unlike anywhere else on our patch. Built in the grounds of the former county hospital, it mixes conversions inside the original Victorian buildings with newer housing around them.
The conversions are the ones to plan for: generous rooms and high ceilings, but communal entrances, shared corridors and staircases that were designed for an institution rather than for a three-seat sofa. We measure the turn before quoting, and the communal areas get protection because they belong to everyone.
The valley lanes
Up towards Godmanstone, Nether Cerne and Cerne Abbas. High banks, narrow carriageways, few passing places and branches that will not clear a high vehicle. Nothing up here is quoted without looking at the approach, and some of these roads flood on a fairly predictable schedule after sustained rain.
Nearby
Poundbury is south-west, Puddletown east. Rural approaches are covered on rural and village moves.
Charminster & Charlton Down questions
What is the housing like in Charminster?
A village core with cottages and older stone property, then substantial post-war and modern development around it. The centre is tight; the rest is straightforward.
What is Charlton Down?
A self-contained community built in the grounds of the former county hospital — a mix of conversions in the original Victorian buildings and newer houses around them. The conversions are the interesting part: generous rooms, communal entrances and some genuinely awkward staircases.
Do you go up to Cerne Abbas?
Yes, and the valley villages on the way — Godmanstone, Nether Cerne, Charminster's outlying lanes. Narrow, with high banks and few passing places, so the approach gets checked first.
Is the river a factor?
Occasionally. The Cerne valley roads flood on a fairly predictable schedule after sustained rain, and one or two approaches become genuinely impassable. We check rather than assume.
